How to choose the right safe

If you’re not completely sure which safe you need, you’re not alone. Most people only buy a safe once, so it’s important to get it right. At The Safe Guys, we look at three main things: the security rating, how you want to access the safe, and how it will be installed.

Safe grades & insurance

Safes are independently tested to European standards such as EN 14450 and EN 1143-1. These grades usually determine how much your insurer will allow you to store.

Most insurers require the safe to be professionally installed for these values to apply.

Locks & installation

  • Key locks: simple and reliable, but keys must be stored securely.
  • Electronic locks: quick access via PIN, ideal for shared use.
  • Mechanical combination: no batteries, very dependable.
  • Dual locking (Grade 3+): added protection for higher-value storage.
Proper installation is just as important as the safe itself. Floor fixing into solid concrete is usually best, with wall fixing only suitable for strong, load-bearing brickwork.
