Locksmith guide
How to avoid overpaying on a locksmith callout
Locksmith pricing can feel confusing because two jobs that look similar can be completely different underneath.
The easiest way to keep it fair is to confirm what’s included (labour, parts, VAT) and give the locksmith the right details up front.
Before you book (2-minute checklist)
Ask if it’s a fixed price for the common jobs (lockout, cylinder change).
Confirm parts (euro cylinder / mortice / gearbox) are quoted separately if needed.
Explain the door type (uPVC/composite/wood) and what’s failing (handle lifts? key turns?).
Check arrival ETA and if there’s an out-of-hours fee.
If you’re locked out, mention whether the door is locked or just shut — that alone can change the method and time.
Lock upgrades that actually matter
Anti-snap euro cylinders: major upgrade for many uPVC/composite doors.
BS3621 mortice locks: often required/liked by insurers for timber doors.
Door alignment & keeps: prevents stiff locks and repeat callouts.
Gearbox issues: common on uPVC — can look like “lock failure” but is actually mechanism wear.
